How to use it
- Enter your monthly take-home pay: what lands in your account after tax.
- List each regular cost and mark it as a need, a want, or savings and debt payments.
- Read the totals and the three bars. The white marks show 50%, 30% and 20%.
Good to know
The 50/30/20 guide puts about half of take-home pay toward needs such as rent, food and transport, about 30% toward wants, and about 20% toward savings and paying down debt.
It is a rule of thumb, not a rule. In expensive cities needs often take more than half, and that is normal.
