Apple's new smart home: a $299 HomeView screen, Siri AI and a smart lock
Apple had one of its biggest smart home days in years on Tuesday. The centerpiece is HomeView, a $299 smart display that runs Apple's new Siri AI, joined by a new Apple TV 4K, a pricier HomePod mini and a full set of locks, doorbells and cameras.
HomeView: Apple's kitchen screen
- What it is: a hub that looks like a HomePod with a screen on the front. It sits on a counter or mounts on a wall, TechCrunch reports. It is 7 inches wide, with one front FaceTime camera and speakers and microphones in the base.
- What it does: controls your smart home devices, makes FaceTime calls, plays music and video, and shows photos. Apple pitches it for the kitchen, for recipes and calls.
- It knows who is looking: it recognizes people in your household and shows each person their own messages, calendar, notes and apps, switching when someone else walks up.
- Colors: silver, starlight, rose pink and space gray.
- Rivals: Amazon's Echo Show and Google's Nest Hub.

The lock, doorbell, cameras and thermostat were built with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric, Apple says, and arrive in December.
The catch in Europe
HomeView will not launch in the European Union for now. Apple told MacRumors that Siri AI is not currently available on iOS in the EU, and that it is "working constructively with the EU in an attempt to find a path forward." There is no timeline. HomeView goes on sale November 13 in eight countries.

Why it matters
Apple's HomePod has trailed Amazon and Google, and reports linked HomeView's delays to problems with Siri AI, TechCrunch notes. This launch is Apple's bet that a smarter Siri finally makes its home products worth buying. Whether Siri AI is as good as promised is the thing to judge in the first reviews.
